Advancing our understanding-first, whole-child model of pediatric mental health care

By Blackbird Health

Blackbird Health is pleased to welcome Michael Tang, MD, MBA as our new Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Tang joined the organization on March 2, 2026, bringing deep clinical expertise and leadership experience in integrated behavioral health.

We are grateful to Nicole Garber, MD for her leadership and clinical vision during her time as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Garber will be stepping away to focus more deeply on her longstanding work and advocacy in the field of eating disorders.

A leader in integrated pediatric mental health care

The Summer Slide Slide and Mental Health.Blackbird Health-1Dr. Tang is a quadruple board-certified physician in child and adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, pediatrics, and addiction medicine. Throughout his career, he has focused on improving how mental health care is delivered to children and families—building models that increase access, coordination, and outcomes.

Most recently, Dr. Tang served as Vice President of Integrated Care and Head of Behavioral Health at Cityblock Health, a national value-based care organization. There, he led teams responsible for quality, population health, clinical design, and clinical informatics, helping develop behavioral health programs designed to improve access and outcomes at scale.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Tang served as Chief Behavioral Health Officer at The Dimock Center, a Boston-based community health center and mental health agency, and as Boston Site Director for Health Leads, a nonprofit focused on addressing social determinants of health.

Dr. Tang completed his pediatrics residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center, and his residency and fellowship in adult and child psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and his MBA from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.

Strengthening Blackbird’s whole-child model of care

“Mike brings a unique combination of clinical depth, operational insight, and strategic systems thinking,” said Anita Cattrell, President and Chief Operating Officer of Blackbird Health. “His leadership will be instrumental in advancing our precision-based care model for children with ADHD, anxiety, and autism spectrum disorder. As we continue expanding access to high-quality pediatric mental health care, we’re excited to welcome a leader whose values align with our commitment to clinical excellence and improved long-term outcomes for the families we serve.”

Dr. Tang says the mission and model of care at Blackbird Health were a natural fit.

“I am thrilled to join the Blackbird Health team. Blackbird’s model of understanding the whole child and providing rapid, integrated care deeply resonates with my experiences as both a pediatrician and child psychiatrist. I have seen how this data-driven approach helps families achieve their long-term goals while reducing the need for medications. As our country faces a child mental health crisis, Blackbird’s whole-person model is more essential than ever.”

Blackbird Health’s approach is built around gaining a deeper understanding of what is driving a child’s symptoms before determining treatment.

“The traditional diagnostic model groups symptoms into categories like ADHD or anxiety, but that doesn’t necessarily tell you what’s driving a child’s challenges,” said Tom Peterson, CEO of Blackbird Health. “What we’ve learned is that there can be very different underlying drivers for the same diagnosis. When you understand those drivers, you can design much more effective treatment plans for each child.”

Expanding access to pediatric mental health care

Blackbird Health provides coordinated pediatric mental health care—including comprehensive evaluations, therapy, and medication management—delivered both in person and virtually to meet families where they are.

Today, Blackbird operates clinics across the Mid-Atlantic region, including locations in Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Northern Virginia, with additional growth planned throughout 2026.

As Blackbird continues to grow, the organization remains focused on improving access to thoughtful, integrated care that helps children—and their families—better understand and move forward from mental health challenges.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Tang and look forward to the leadership and perspective he will bring to the next phase of Blackbird Health’s growth.
